HDR 142: John Boehner – Winner or Loser?

Reid: "But what about my cowboy poets?" Boehner: "Git along, little dogie."

ALOHA, ALL!! You wouldn’t believe the anger flowing on John Boehner’s Facebook page.  And it’s not from the left, it’s from supposed Tea Party folks!  They really wanted the government to shut down (and I agreed last week.)  But now that the dust has settled, it’s clear that Boehner accomplished some remarkable things in this whole budget broohaha.  Here are a few of those accomplishments, related specifically to 0bamacare (From Independent Women’s Voice ):

GUARANTEES SENATE VOTE ON REPEAL OF OBAMACARE. The agreement reached with Senate Democrats guarantees a Senate debate and vote on legislation that would repeal President Obama’s government takeover of health care in its entirety. The House passed such legislation in January as part of the Pledge to America.

NEW TOOLS IN THE FIGHT TO REPEAL OBAMACARE. The agreement will generate new tools for the fight to repeal Obamacare by requiring numerous studies that will force the Obama Administration to reveal the true impact of the law’s mandates, including a study of how individuals and families will see increased premiums as a result of certain Obamacare mandates; a full audit of all the waivers that the Obama Administration has given to firms and organizations – including unions – who can’t meet the new annual coverage limits; a full audit of what’s happening with the comparative effectiveness research funding that was in Obamacare and the president’s failed “stimulus” spending bill; and a report on all of the contractors who have been hired to implement the law and the costs to taxpayers of such contracts.

DENIES ADDITIONAL FUNDING TO THE IRS. The Obama administration has sought increased federal funding for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) – money that could be used to hire additional agents to enforce the administration’s agenda on a variety of issues. This increased funding is denied in the agreement.

American Thinker adds more accomplishments, such as the fact that Boehner actually got $6.5 billion more in cuts than he originally asked for.  Read more here:  American Thinker Blog: The GOP did just fine

But my favorite analysis was written by Warner Todd Huston:  Budget Victory: All Right, Tea Partiers, Time to Stop Whining and Learn Politics « Publius Forum “You see, what will happen if you begin calling the GOP failures and traitors is that they won’t get scared into working harder. They will think that there is no satisfying you and they will begin to ignore you. Your strategy now should be to offer gentle praise for the GOP, claim this as the victory that it is and then remind your representatives that this is just the beginning and you expect more.”  Wise advice, fellow Tea Partiers.  Boehner?  DUH – winner!   Now let’s move on to the next battle – it’s gonna be a doozy.

Quiz:  Who said this? “We are absolutely outraged. This is the functional equivalent of bombing innocent civilians.  It’s time that the District of Columbia told the Congress to go straight to hell.” *

How about this one?  “In ’94 people were elected simply to come here to kill the National Endowment for the Arts. Now they’re here to kill women.” **

One more:  “This is a Civil War fight. I think Time magazine has it right. This is the 150th anniversary of the 1861 Civil War.” ***

Ah yes…..the civility of the leftists!  Here’s a quote for them:  “This is what a REPUBLIC looks like!”

ALL THIS TALK ABOUT DEATH, DOOM AND GLOOM!  Don’t fear the Reaper, Dems….especially if there’s more cowbell – LOL!!

Barry/Barack lectures us yet again.  Obama lectures America on ‘living within our means’ – Common American Journal “Barack Obama tripled the national deficit in his first year in office. In his second year the deficit was again a record $1.29 Trillion. This year the deficit will be even higher…”  “THIS IS WHAT HYPOCRISY LOOKS LIKE!!!”

Final Thought: “We can evade reality, but we cannot evade the consequences of evading reality” – Ayn Rand

GOD BLESS AMERICA – PASS THIS ON – REMEMBER IN 2012!!

This was a conservative victory. Wars are won battle by battle and Obama lost this battle badly (and them claimed credit for winning it). Smart conservatives will accept that we can’t get everything all at once, but by keeping the momentum up and supporting folks like the Speaker we’ll get more in the end.

Reading the article(s) reinforces my hunch that Boehner and other Conservatives may have conceded some ground last week in order to regroup and gear up for a much bigger fight over Ryan’s budget bill which would accomplish about 10,000% as much good as the other 35 billion.

Also for me, the critical point Boehner forces to the front is a vote in the Senate on ditching Obamacare. This close to an election, Senators who vote against a repeal are going to have to answer for it in hundreds of town hall meetings. 23 Senate seats held by Democrats are up for grabs. Boehner and the Conservatives in the House can accomplish none of the goals set out by American Conservatives without a majority in the Senate. I think that’s the focus and I think Boehner is willing to take the heat that both far left and far right critics will have in order to double (or triple) the Conservative influence.

Good point at the beginning. Conservatives are self-defeating as a matter of course. It comes from the lack of education on political matters and a self-centered, rather than agenda-centered, short-sightedness manifesting as an unrealistic purism.

This article makes similar point, though at one point the writer can’t resist making the very mistake he attacks: http://thepatriotsnews.com/indx.php/content/134
