HDR 119: The Patriot Act and the Acts of a Patriot

ALOHA, ALL! First, the real story on the Patriot Act – Last night, despite a strong majority vote in favor of the bill, the House of Representatives fell seven votes short of the two-thirds they needed to suspend the rules and pass three key counterterrorism amendments to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). Many of the headlines you will read today will say things like “Patriot Act Extension Fails in House,” but the reality is that much of the PATRIOT Act was already permanently enacted:  Morning Bell: Patriot Act Facts | The Foundry: Conservative Policy News.

Next, a story of a TRUE Patriot….my father-in-law, Vincent Rethman.  He was recently highlighted in the Venice (FL) Herald Tribune.  Dad was a fighter pilot in WWII, as you’ll read in the article.  But here’s some back story:  He was the only son of German immigrants and is the fourth of five kids (his mother was the youngest of 20!)  His father died from appendicitis when he was very young, so at an early age Dad assumed duties as the “man of the house.”  Dad turns 95 next week – What a life he has led!  And when you read this you’ll see why he is a perfect representative of our “Greatest Generation”:  Pilot logged 69 flights in fighters | HeraldTribune.com We love you, Dad – Happy Birthday!!!

Remember all that talk about Barack Obama’s bounce in the polls after the lame-duck session? We can officially proclaim that duck cooked now, and the bouncing cat officially dead, or at least comatose.  Gallup’s latest survey on issues and presidential approval shows Obama below a majority on every single issue — and seriously underwater in the highest priorities for voters in the last midterm election:  Gallup shows Obama at 27% approval on handling deficit, 37% on economy « Hot Air

It’s a few days old but too exquisitely shameless to let pass. How shameless? So shameless that even his pals at PolitiFact, who normally can be trusted to shill for him on ObamaCare, can’t absolve him:  Obama: Oh, by the way, I haven’t raised taxes once « Hot Air And from the Patriot Post….”I didn’t raise taxes once.” –Barack Obama (“Once” is the only true part of that statement. According to The Heritage Foundation, “All told Obamacare contains 18 separate tax increases that will cost taxpayers $503 billion between 2010 and 2019.”)

Killing 0bamacare.  House Republicans will use a stopgap spending bill coming to the floor next week as a vehicle to block money for the new health-care law, a top lawmaker said Tuesday:  GOP Seeks to Block Funding for Health Law – WSJ.com

And you thought California was the land of fruits and nuts.  “[T]he Hawaii House is considering legislation that would outlaw the sale of toy guns to minors. Apparently some kids use these guns to spray other youngsters with dangerous dihydrogen monoxide. It seems to us this is a wrongheaded policy, not to mention a violation of the Second Amendment. Remember, squirt guns don’t squirt squirts, squirts squirt squirts.” –Wall Street Journal columnist James Taranto

Gotta love S.E. Cupp!  Michelle Obama, are you calling me fat? First Lady’s war on junk food has gone too far

Government Motors sure made out on this deal! I thought something was fishy with this story when it first happened.  Now it appears that the Transportation Department sat on info that would have cleared Toyota:  Image Assassination – Investors.com

Fruitcake?  How about a new president? On Monday, Obama addressed the strained relations with the US Chamber of Commerce at a meeting with them, saying he had come to the Chamber “in the interest of being more neighborly.” The Chamber is located a block away from the White House, on the other side of Lafayette Park. Obama to Business Community: ‘Ask Yourselves What You Can Do for America’ | CNSnews.com “Maybe we would have gotten off on a better foot if I had brought over a fruitcake when we first moved in,” he joked.  Funny stuff.

Now THAT’S Funny!!!!!

Final Thought: “Government is like a baby. An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other.”  Ronald Reagan
