Farewell, Iron Lady
ALOHA, ALL! We lost a great leader. Margaret Thatcher has passed away, leaving all of us who remember her strength, courage and leadership feeling a huge loss. Will our children remember her the same way? Following is a post from my friend NEO’s blog, written by his co-blogger, Jessica. It sums up Mrs. Thatcher perfectly.
The death has just been announced in London of Lady Thatcher. As my short series last week made clear, I think she was giant of the political scene. She did things which were thought to be impossible. She treated the glass ceiling as though it didn’t exist, she stood up to Communism and Trades Unions at a time when the consensus was appeasement she stood up for British interests all over the world, and when the stern test of the Falklands came, she showed her mettle.
We shall not see her like again. We’ve been discussing why people are disenchanted with politicians and politics – part of the answer is that we don’t have leaders like her and Mr Reagan. Like them or loathe them, no one could say they were colourless and didn’t know what they stood for. She was, of course, in practice, far more pragmatic than her enemies gave her credit for, but she never gave in over essentials – and that’s the difference between her and her successors. Of course all politicians have to make compromises, but if you compromise on essentials then people will rightly conclude that you have no principles and will treat you accordingly.
She and Mr Reagan got on splendidly, but it was because he knew she was a straight-shooter. When Al Haig appeared not to know whether Argentina or Britain was the right side to back, Mrs T got on the phone and told ‘Ronnie’ what she thought. As all great men do, he didn’t mind being told the truth, and he acted. She did this without making waves in public, but it helped cement their relationship. She saw that Mr Reagan was like her – a man of his word who wanted to get things done.
Mrs Thatcher was the ultimate conviction politician. Yes, she had PR men, but their job was to help her get her message across, not to provide the message. They helped her with her voice projection and her style, but again, all of this was a means to an end – not an end in itself. She came up the hard way, and to the end she was undefeated. She never lost a leadership contest of a general election. She went because small men in her own party took fright and would not back her. She won the leadership election, but not by a margin sufficient to avoid another round, and after such a huge impact on politics she declined to subject herself to that. The Western world lost a great leader – and the Conservative party lost its way.
In an era when politicians seem to care more about being popular than getting things done, Lady Thatcher stands out as one who was willing to risk unpopularity in order to get things done. We have not seen her like since. She is a figure for the ages now.

Hump Day Report: Giving Thanks
ALOHA, ALL! It’s been a rough month. The outcome on November 6 was not just a disappointment but a kick in the gut. We’re stuck with Obama for another 4 years and there’s a stronger Democrat majority in the Senate. But we still have the House, small consolation considering all that’s been lost. And just to make this month’s misery last a little longer, Allen West conceded his race the other day. These are the times when you wish you had a rewind button – a time machine that could make it all go away. Even still, we have much to be thankful for. We are STILL the greatest country to ever inhabit the earth. We are STILL the symbol of freedom around the world. We are STILL America. So while we’ve been dealt a body blow, think of the unrest in the Middle East and the daily assaults on Israel (great article that puts what’s happening there in perspective: Middle East Burning). And remember our ideals and what makes us great.
As we reflect on our many blessings, many of us have trepidation and fear in our hearts. Are we still that “shining city on a hill”? We need perspective, and I can’t think of more appropriate comments than those made by fellow blogger Jessica, who describes herself as “Anglo-Catholic, wife, biscuit-maker and Liverpool fan – probably in that order.” Interesting that a Brit is so spot-on in her concepts of America! Jessica’s blog is All Along The Watchtower and she recently wrote this post for Nebraska Energy Observer:
It was John Winthrop, Governor of Massachusetts in the early seventeenth century who uttered the phrase used by so many politicians since:
“For we must consider that we shall be as a City upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us. Soe that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause him to withdraw his present help from us, we shall be made a story and a byword throughout the world.”
President Reagan, of course, used it in his great farewell address to the Nation on 11 January 1989, when he thanked the American people for ‘the chance to serve’. How much, in that simple phrase, he caught the essence of Christian leadership – that he who is first should be the servant of all. There was no arrogance of power and office in President Reagan. He came from humble beginnings and was, in many ways the quintessence of the American Dream. He wasn’t a great intellect, he wasn’t even a professional politician, and in many ways seemed uninterested in politics at the every day level. He saw the big picture – what it meant to be ‘an American’ – ‘we stood for freedom’, he told the Nation. That America did, does, and always will. ‘We made a difference’, he told America. Hump Day Report: Day of Deliverance
ALOHA, ALL!! Wednesday we celebrate Independence Day. No, it’s not “July Fourth” it’s Independence Day. July fourth is just a date, one day out of 365 in a year. Nothing special. Independence Day is a big deal. Following is one of the best overviews of Independence Day that I’ve seen. No wonder it’s from Ronald Reagan. (My only beef with Reagan is he calls it the Fourth of July. Oh well….I guess no one’s perfect.) As you read this, understand what our Founding Fathers sacrificed to start this nation. Then ask yourself if you’re willing to do a comparatively minimal amount to save this country. (Skaka to Brett)
What July Fourth Means to Me
by President Ronald Reagan, July 1981
For one who was born and grew up in the small towns of the Midwest, there is a special kind of nostalgia about the Fourth of July.
I remember it as a day almost as long-anticipated as Christmas. This was helped along by the appearance in store windows of all kinds of fireworks and colorful posters advertising them with vivid pictures.
No later than the third of July – sometimes earlier – Dad would bring home what he felt he could afford to see go up in smoke and flame. We’d count and recount the number of firecrackers, display pieces and other things and go to bed determined to be up with the sun so as to offer the first, thunderous notice of the Fourth of July.
I’m afraid we didn’t give too much thought to the meaning of the day. And, yes, there were tragic accidents to mar it, resulting from careless handling of the fireworks. I’m sure we’re better off today with fireworks largely handled by professionals. Yet there was a thrill never to be forgotten in seeing a tin can blown 30 feet in the air by a giant “cracker” – giant meaning it was about 4 inches long.
But enough of nostalgia. Somewhere in our growing up we began to be aware of the meaning of days and with that awareness came the birth of patriotism. July Fourth is the birthday of our nation. I believed as a boy, and believe even more today, that it is the birthday of the greatest nation on earth.
There is a legend about the day of our nation’s birth in the little hall in Philadelphia, a day on which debate had raged for hours. The men gathered there were honorable men hard-pressed by a king who had flouted the very laws they were willing to obey. Even so, to sign the Declaration of Independence was such an irretrievable act that the walls resounded with the words “treason, the gallows, the headsman’s axe,” and the issue remained in doubt.
The legend says that at that point a man rose and spoke. He is described as not a young man, but one who had to summon all his energy for an impassioned plea. He cited the grievances that had brought them to this moment and finally, his voice falling, he said, “They may turn every tree into a gallows, every hole into a grave, and yet the words of that parchment can never die. To the mechanic in the workshop, they will speak hope; to the slave in the mines, freedom. Sign that parchment. Sign if the next moment the noose is around your neck, for that parchment will be the textbook of freedom, the Bible of the rights of man forever.”
He fell back exhausted. The 56 delegates, swept up by his eloquence, rushed forward and signed that document destined to be as immortal as a work of man can be. When they turned to thank him for his timely oratory, he was not to be found, nor could any be found who knew who he was or how he had come in or gone out through the locked and guarded doors.
Well, that is the legend. But we do know for certain that 56 men, a little band so unique we have never seen their like since, had pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. Some gave their lives in the war that followed, most gave their fortunes, and all preserved their sacred honor.
What manner of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists, 11 were merchants and tradesmen, and nine were farmers. They were soft-spoken men of means and education; they were not an unwashed rabble. They had achieved security but valued freedom more. Their stories have not been told nearly enough.
John Hart was driven from the side of his desperately ill wife. For more than a year he lived in the forest and in caves before he returned to find his wife dead, his children vanished, his property destroyed. He died of exhaustion and a broken heart.
Carter Braxton of Virginia lost all his ships, sold his home to pay his debts, and died in rags. And so it was with Ellery, Clymer, Hall, Walton, Gwinnett, Rutledge, Morris, Livingston and Middleton.
Nelson personally urged Washington to fire on his home and destroy it when it became the headquarters for General Cornwallis. Nelson died bankrupt.
But they sired a nation that grew from sea to shining sea. Five million farms, quiet villages, cities that never sleep, 3 million square miles of forest, field, mountain and desert, 227 million people with a pedigree that includes the bloodlines of all the world.
In recent years, however, I’ve come to think of that day as more than just the birthday of a nation. It also commemorates the only true philosophical revolution in all history.
Oh, there have been revolutions before and since ours. But those revolutions simply exchanged one set of rules for another. Ours was a revolution that changed the very concept of government.
Let the Fourth of July always be a reminder that here in this land, for the first time, it was decided that man is born with certain God-given rights; that government is only a convenience created and managed by the people, with no powers of its own except those voluntarily granted to it by the people.
We sometimes forget that great truth, and we never should.
Happy Fourth of July.
Ronald Reagan, President of the United States
Final Thought: ”The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever.”
–John Adams wrote this in a letter to his wife, Abigail, on July 3, 1776.

Hump Day Report: CCLVI and CI
ALOHA. ALL! Did you enjoy Super Bowl XLVI last night? If you watched it with any teenage kids, you probably should have asked them what “XLVI” means. Chances are, they wouldn’t have know. You see, they’re not teaching Roman numerals in schools any more. They teach all manner of green eco-nonsense and societal fairness, but Roman numerals are history….so to speak. OK, granted Roman numerals aren’t used all that often. But it’s one more example of how schools are sweeping historical perspectives away and ushering in their own priorities. Editorial: Friends, Romans, lend us your numerals (BTW…as the title for this issue of the HDR says, this is the 256th edition. Holy Moly!)
And they’re drinking in all the leftist crap. I recently read a book by Marybeth Hicks called “Don’t Let The Kids Drink The Kool-Aid.” Do you know what’s being taught in your schools? How about these little gems:
- Socialism is better than the free marker
- Christianity is judgmental and mean
- America is the villain of world history
- Family doesn’t mean marriage
- Greed is destroying the earth
- We need the government to take care of us
It’s been going on for years, folks. Wake up….and read this book! And guess who are the poster children of Kool-Aid drinkers? The darlings of the media…the OWS:
Happy Birthday President Reagan! (Yes, the other Roman numeral in the HDR title is in honor of Reagan’s 101st birthday.) Ronald Reagan’s 101st Birthday: His Legacy Lives On ”Upon his inauguration, Reagan was confronted with a deep economic crisis, one of the worst sustained inflations in America’s history, historically high unemployment, the fallout from an energy crisis, stagnation, massive government spending, an untenable tax burden, a hollow military, and the Soviet threat. Yet in the face of the economic crisis, President Reagan turned toward not more government, but less. And in the face of a global threat, he turned toward a stronger military and international leadership — not a weaker military and retrenchment.”
So I HAVE to show this:
Don’t believe the phony unemployment numbers. Record 1.2 Million People Fall Out Of Labor Force In One Month, Labor Force Participation Rate Tumbles To Fresh 30 Year Low ”…the civilian labor force tumbled to a fresh 30 year low of 63.7% as the BLS is seriously planning on eliminating nearly half of the available labor pool from the unemployment calculation.” And here are some raw numbers for you: Unemployment numbers fudged | Sage of the Nansemond
By now you’ve heard the “Natural Born Citizen” case in Georgia was dismissed. Which begs this question: If Obama has no Natural Born Citizenship problem why did Congress try to fix it? ”Congress made eight different attempts to alter our U.S. Constitution concerning the Natural Born Citizenship Clause according to the apocalyptic video documentary done with research by Senior Pastor Carl Gallups proving they knew Barack Obama lacked presidential eligibility prior to the 2008 election.”

Let the Taliban know all they have to do is wait for another year. Senate [complete lack of] Intelligence Committee chairwoman broadcasts details of secret meeting – Common American Journal Feinstein blabbed about the Mossad boss’ secret meeting in DC with the CIA. Then there’s Ginsberg. Justice Ginsburg Violates Her Oath – Common American Journal Yep, she said this: “You should be aided by all the constitutional writings that have gone on since the end of World War II, I would not look to the US Constitution if I were drafting a constitution in the year 2012.” They shoot horses, don’t they????
This seems appropriate. Note: If Planned Parenthood is so concerned about women getting mammograms, why don’t they have the machines in their facilities? Oh, that’s right! HDR 173: ACORN Lives!
ALOHA, All!! You thought they passed a law in 2009 that ACORN wouldn’t get any more tax dollars, right? Silly you – 0bama found a way to give them your money anyhow. After all, he has a long history with this fraudulent group. JW Probe: Obama’s HUD Violates ACORN Funding Ban | Judicial Watch ”This week a JW probe uncovered that Obama’s Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently awarded a $79,819 grant to an ACORN reincarnation called Affordable Housing Centers of America (AHCOA). Incredibly, the government’s federal expenditure website openly describes the recipient as ACORN Housing Corporation Inc. and lists the group’s New Orleans address at 1024 Elysian Fields….In all, HUD awarded 108 “fair housing organizations” more than $40 million to educate the public and combat discrimination. The allocation represents a $13.2 million increase over last year’s allotment to end housing discrimination against minorities.” The 0bama administration has circumvented the laws and the wishes of the people in countless ways! (See below.) I can’t wait to throw this egotistical, Marxist usurper out of office.
He has declared himself emperor. Morning Bell: Five Ways Obama Is Circumventing the Legislative Branch ”The Obama Administration generally employs one of two strategies to legislate without—and often in spite of—congressional action: (1) administrative decree establishing a new federal rule, or (2) a refusal to enforce existing federal law.”

Look For The Coverup And See The Lie: Eliminating The Natural Born Clause | Logistics Monster ”Numerous legislative attempts to eliminate the natural born clause from the Constitution began in 2003 in order to allow Barry Soetoro to become a Constitutional president. The bills that were introduced follow the video. Now you know why the entire Congress is sticking together on the eligibility issue; hang together or hang separately.”
More monkey business. Democratic Lawmakers May Proclaim Debt Ceiling Unconstitutional As A Last Ditch Effort To Avert Default ”The Democrats’ argument hinges on the 14th Amendment, which states: “The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.”
Guess who honored Ronald Reagan on OUR Independence Day? Weasel Zippers » Blog Archive » UK honors Ronald Reagan with a 10-foot bronze statue ”Fitting that on the day we celebrate our independence from Great Britain, they honor one of our greatest freedom-loving presidents.”

Here’s a good one – TEACHER ARRESTED! A public school teacher was arrested today at John F. Kennedy International airport as he attempted to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a compass, a slide-rule and a calculator. At a morning press conference, Attorney General Eric Holder said he believes the man is a member of the notorious Al-Gebra movement. He did not identify the man, who has been charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.
‘Al-Gebra is a problem for us’, the Attorney General said. ‘They derive solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in search of absolute values.’ They use secret code names like “X” and “Y” and refer to themselves as “unknowns” but we have determined that they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, “There are 3 sides to every triangle.“
When asked to comment on the arrest, President Obama said, “If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, he would have given us more fingers and toes.” White House aides told reporters they could not recall a more intelligent or profound statement by the President. It is believed that another Nobel Prize will follow. (Yes, it’s a joke…but can’t you just picture it????? Thanks to Cindy for the much needed laugh!)
Final Thought: ”We here still move in twilight. But we have one beacon to guide us that Ronald Reagan never had. We have his example. Let us give thanks today for a life that achieved so much for all of God’s children.” Margaret Thatcher Eulogy to Ronald Reagan, June 11, 2004

HDR 126: How to Argue with A Socialist/Liberal – And Win!
ALOHA, ALL!!! What do you say to your liberal friends (I know…an oxymoron) when they whine that “without public sector unions we wouldn’t have weekends,” or “the Republicans are just as bad as the Democrats in cheating taxpayers”? OH…OH…and my personal favorite, ”the teachers in Wisconsin are doing this for the kids.” Sure they are. Here’s your one, MUST READ article of the day/week/month: 10 Facts to Win Every Argument on … the Evils of Public Sector Unions | NewsReal Blog A little preview: Private sector unions fight with management over an equitable distribution of profits. Government unions negotiate with politicians over taxpayer money, putting the public interest at odds with union interests and, as we’ve seen in states such as California and Wisconsin, exploding the cost of government. The labor-politician negotiations can’t be fair when the unions can put so much money into campaign spending. Victor Gotbaum, a leader in the New York City chapter of AFSCME, summed up the problem in 1975 when he boasted, ‘We have the ability, in a sense, to elect our own boss.’” DUH!!!!!
GAO exposes billions in waste & duplication: http://budget.senate.gov/republican/pressarchive/2011-03-01GAOStudy.pdf Tuesday, the GAO identified massive duplication, fragmentation, and other inefficiencies that cost taxpayers billions of dollars every year in waste and degraded service—all while President Obama’s budget surges federal spending across the board and adds $13 trillion to the debt. This is the first time the GAO has reported on duplication in government. What the heck took them so long????
